MANILA - Yao Jie wore down world No. 1 Zhang Ning to pull off a shock 21-19, 18-21, 21-11 victory as Europe got back at Asia and ruled the MVP Cup Asia vs Europe 2 with a 10-8 victory at the close Of the $100,000 duel at the Araneta Coliseum yesterday. Jie, who bowed to Zhang, 11-8, 11-0, when Asia reigned over Europe, 11-8, last year, came out smoking in the deciding set, racing to an 11-5 lead before thwarting every Zhang fightback with solid returns and efficient offense to complete the victory and clinch the tie for Europe.

Asia blanks Europe, 3-0, in MVP Cup 2 opener
MANILA – Asia, behind fancied Lin Dan and Zhang Ning, drew first blood in the MVP Cup Asia vs Europe 2 badminton challenge as the two Chinese aces scored contrasting victories over their respective rivals to key a 3-0 win over Europe at the start of the event at the Araneta Coliseum Friday. Lin, currently No. 2 in the world ranking, overcame a lethargic start with a pretty solid performance in the second and three sets which he dominated en route to posting a 19-21, 21-14, 21-10 victory over Niels Christian Kaldau of Denmark in the first singles match of the three-day $100,000 event pitting the best of Asia against some of Europe’s finest shuttlers.

MVP Cup 2 to again feature Top Players from Asia and Europe
June 1, 2006, Manila - IMG today announced that the second edition of the MVP Cup—which is a selection of top players from Europe taking on a selection from Asia—will take place in Manila from July 14 – 16, 2006. The Asian Badminton Confederation (ABC) and the European Badminton Union (EBU) will field All-Star teams to compete against each other for USD 100,000 in prize money—an increase from the USD 80,000 on offer last year. The event will feature an elite group of Asian players vs their compatriots from Europe in a unique format of matches over the 3-day period.
