PROFILE:
Zhang has been dominant in the past 2 years on the IBF circuit.
In her 12-year career, she’s won an amazing 27
individual titles, including the World Championships
(2003) and Olympic Gold Medal (2004). She has won the
Singapore Open an incredible 4 times! Even after 12 years
on the IBF circuit, she continues to play at the top of her
game. This year alone, Zhang has won or finished runner-up
in 17 of the last 20 events she’s played in.
Zhang’s rivalry with Mia Audina Tjiptawan is also well documented.
From Zhang’s 3-set loss to Mia in the 1994 Uber Cup final to
her recent 3-set victory over her in the 2006 Uber Cup final
in Tokyo, they’ve held 9 matches in individual events with
Mia winning 5 of those; however, in team play, Zhang has
defeated Mia more often including her straight set victory
in last year’s MVP Cup opening match.
